Week 1 (1/12 to 1/18)

The focus of this week is on Chapter 1: The Nature of Probability and Statistics. The goals are to understand the basic concepts and terminologies in statistics, various types of measurement scales, and basic concepts in data production. Although due dates for the assignments and quizzes are not on this week, but it is strongly recommended that you do them as soon as you finished studying the materials.

To Do List:

1. Read all the sections in chapter 1.

2. Download lecture notes and view recorded lecture for chapter 1 (V.1, V.2, and V.3). (The lecture notes Chapter 1 Notes are on the right, next to video links in the lecture video web page.)

3. Try the Chapter Quiz and Exercise in the textbook.

4. Have the statistical software ready on your computer for future data analysis exercise and projects. You can also find the computer lab that has SPSS installed, such as Lincoln Hall or the computer lab on the 3rd floor of Cushwa hall. You may also lease a license for IBM® SPSS® Statistics Base GradPack (it is cheapest option on the list) from the following site: OnTheHub.com. “R” is another statistical software that you can try. It is a free software but it may not be as easy as SPSS to learn or to use. If you are interested in using R and R Commander software (free to download and install),  please see R Instructions page for installation and tutorials information. SPSS and R are both statistical software that, I believe, works better than EXCEL when making charts or doing statistical analysis. However, if you are very good at EXCEL you can try using EXCEL for assignments.

5. Be sure that you are able to find all the course information and login course related web sites such as Blackboard and CONNECT and know how to communicate with the instructor.
